Dallas Center-Grimes
Coaching Staff
Scott Heitland
Head Coach (8th Season)
The 2010 Mustang squad finished in a flurry and captured a share of the District 8 title. Reaching post-season play for the fourth straight year, the Mustangs fell to then ranked #1 Pella 17-7 in a hard fought contest. This year’s squad is counting on that strong finish to propel them to a great start in 2011.
The 2011 schedule remains the same as the Mustangs tackle Ballard and Carroll in non-district play. Then welcome Newton, a team that finished last season by beating the top two teams in District 8, to Grimes in week three for the start of district play. Longtime rival ADM awaits the following week followed by a homecoming showdown with Saydel. The Mustangs will finish the 2011 schedule with the top two district teams from last year, Norwalk and Carlisle. Games with Perry and Knoxville will test the 2011 squad in the final weeks as well.
Leading the way for this year’s squad on offense will be First Team All-District wide receiver Tyler Peyton. Peyton emerged by mid-season last year as the favorite target of Mustang quarterbacks. His huge 4th down reception against Perry sparked the Mustangs to a dramatic 24-point comeback and an overtime win. Undoubtedly one of the most exciting comeback wins in school history. After Peyton, DCG will be looking to many newcomers to fill out the offensive squad. Fighting for the quarterback spot will be the trio of Jordan Kloewer (Jr), Michael Foggia (Jr), and Andrew Kramer (So).
The 2010 defense was the highest-ranked statistical unit under Coach Heitland’s tenure and will be the early strength of the DCG squad. Leading the charge will be First Team All-District and 3rd Team All-State Linebacker Zach Gardner. Gardner, last seasons leading tackler, will anchor the middle of what looks to be a stout defensive unit. Joining him will be returning starters Jordan DeWald and Alex Hansen. Upfront a pair of juniors who had breakout sophomore seasons will anchor the defensive line - Peyton Brecht and Jordan Eastman. In the defensive backfield, Jared Kramer will return and will be joined by a number of underclassmen fighting for the remaining spots.
In 2011, DCG will play five regular season games at home, the most that they have hosted in 3 years and will give the Mustang fans ample opportunities to come out and watch some great football.
Coach Heitland’s overall record at DCG in seven seasons is 38-29. He is a 1992 graduate of Algona High School. He received his undergraduate degree in 1996 from UNI and his graduate degree in 2001 from Drake University. Prior to DCG, Heitland spent five years at Boone High School, three years at Prairie Valley High School, and two years at Aplington-Parkersburg under legendary coach Ed Thomas.
